the PS2 only has a USB 1.1 port, which is slow as hell, and reads data SLOWER than even the crap 4X DVD drive on the PS2, meaning nearly all games load significantly slower this way than off disc, many FMVs stutter continously, and lots of games simply will not work at all. You have two ways to load games: USB or via the network port. On a slim you can't do that and the caveats start pouring in. Running off an internal hard drive in a PS2 fat it's fantastic, near instant loading in many games, great compatiblity.

Once you do get a way to load OPL, you need to be aware of the limitations of it.

There are also people willing to install it for the cost of postage on the official forums, which you should probably read anyway to see how it works ( see here) Of course they need a PS2 that is exploited in one way or another. If you can get someone to make you a FMCB memory card then you don't need to bother with any exploits etc, you just plug the card in and that is it. The only problem is it doesn't work on some of the newest slim PS2s as they were released post FMCB and Sony fixed the bug that makes it all possible. As long as the exploited memory card is in it works and you can load up whatever you like without any swap/trigger discs. FMCB is a program that takes advantage of a bug in how the PS2 bootup works once it is installed to a memory card to give you extra menu options on boot so you can load homebrew etc directly. What you should be trying to achieve is to install FMCB (Free Memory Card Boot). I'm not an expert on softmodding techniques (I've got a fat PS2 with a modchip from way back), but you've basically got to get some kind of swap disc (swap magic etc), or certain Action Replay models.

It's mostly newer games that don't work at all, mainly as they were designed that way, and look for HDLoader type software when run. At this point I'd say about 98% of all PS2 games work on OPL, and only a fraction of a percent work in HDLoader only still. This thread is a complete mess, but has the closest thing to a up to date and usable compatibility list. I don't think there's any decent compatiblity lists anymore they're either for the now obsolete HDLoader only, or just plain out of date. There seems to be no open source TCP/IP stack for the PS2, so none of the homebrew is smart enough to connect to the internet to get stuff like artwork automatically. If you are using the internal hard drive you need to make a PARTITION first called "OPL" on the drive (you have to use ulaunchelf to do this), then stick the art folder and images in there.

Basically you need to make jpg or png images (or just download them from that site), and stick them in a directory called "ART" in the root of your games device (whether usb or network share, etc). There's a reasonble guide to artwork here.
